Wire Cut EDM, also known as wire electrical discharge machine, is a non-contact subtractive manufacturing process. Unlike traditional cutting tools that physically shear metal, Wire Cut EDM uses controlled electrical sparks to erode conductive workpiece material.
A thin metal wire (usually molybdenum wire or brass wire) acts as one electrode, and the conductive workpiece serves as the second electrode. A continuous stream of dielectric fluid separates the wire and the workpiece. When voltage is applied, sparks generate extremely high local temperature, melting and vaporizing tiny sections of the metal. The wire moves along a programmed path to cut precise shapes through the material. There is no direct contact between wire and part, so no cutting force occurs during machining.
